چکیده

A make-to-order environment requires flexibility in the supply chain to facilitate fast response. Timely supply deliveries can be achieved in a cost-effective manner by having a portfolio of suppliers, or a portfolio of contracts with a single supplier, with different lead times and associated costs. In this paper we address the inventory management of such a system and evaluate the savings associated with having the option to pay a premium for a quicker response time. We introduce a myopic base-stock policy that uses the exact timing of the outstanding orders to decide whether or not to place an emergency order. Our computational results show that the myopic policy outperforms heuristics proposed in the literature. 1 2004 NSF Design, Service and Manufacturing Grantees and Research Conference/SMU Dallas, Texas

One-for-One Period Policy and its Optimal Solution

In this paper we introduce the optimal solution for a simple and yet practical inventory policy with the important characteristic which eliminates the uncertainty in demand for suppliers. In this new policy which is different from the classical inventory policies, the time interval between any two consecutive orders is fixed and the quantity of each order is one. Assuming the fixed ordering cos...

Periodic Review Inventory Systems with Continuous Demand and Discrete Order Sizes*

We study a single product inventory system with nonnegative setup cost in which the demand is a continuous random variable but orders are restricted to be integer valued. Optimal policies, when there are no setup costs, have a nice form. However, we show that, when the setup costs are nonzero, optimal policies may have a very counterintuitive form without any particular structure. We obtain a b...

Optimal Control Policies for a Periodic Review Inventory System with Emergency Orders

We describe a periodic review inventory system where emergency orders, which have a shorter supply lead time but are subject to higher ordering cost compared to regular orders, can be placed on a continuous basis. We consider the periodic review system in which the order cycles are relatively long so that they are possibly larger than the supply lead times. Study of such systems is important si...

Estimation of the cost function of a two-echelon inventory system with lost sales using regression

Multi-echelon inventory systems are one of the most important and attractive areas in modelling supply chain management so that several researches and studies have been done about. In this paper, the total cost function of a two-echelon inventory system with central warehouse and many identical retailers controlled by continuous review inventory policy is estimated. We have assumed the demand i...

Optimal Replenishment Policies for Multiechelon Inventory Problems Under Advance Demand Information

Customers and downstream supply chain partners often place, or can be induced to place, orders in advance of future requirements. We show how to optimally incorporate advance demand information into periodic-review, multiechelon, inventory systems in series. While the state space for series systems appears to be formidably large, we decompose the problem across locations, as in Clark and Scarf ...
